Instruction, resources & community for those seeking greater awareness, wisdom, and transformation through the Jewish spiritual path of Mussar.

The Mussar Institute (TMI) advances the study and practice of Mussar, a Jewish path of character development and spiritual growth leading to awareness, wisdom, and transformation. The Mussar Institute inspires individuals, organizations, and communities around the world to align heart and mind with the highest ideals of the Jewish tradition.  The Mussar Institute Society USA  is incorporated as a non-profit in the state of Oregon, United States of America, and is registered as a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization.

Brief History of TMI

The Mussar Institute was founded in 2004, by Dr. Alan Morinis, and a small group of dedicated volunteers, to organize the response for requests for courses and facilitator training in Mussar teachings and practices. That year, practitioners gathered for the first Kallah, a tradition that continues annually to this day.  The organization grew steadily, at first operated by volunteers, and today, by a combination of volunteers and professional staff.  In 2018, Dr. Morinis stepped down from day-to-day management of The Mussar Institute to devote his time to writing and, with Rabbi Avi Fertig, Director of Mussar, to translating to English Mussar texts that are currently only available in Hebrew. Reflections on TMI history.

Mussar Institute Europe

Mussar Institute Europe offers a Mussar Summer Academy.  A recent theme was the life and works of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, who spent some years in Amsterdam and wrote Messilat Yesharim there. The venue was near to the place where he lived and worked as a gem cutter. Part of the program was held in an old Portuguese synagogue. Mussar Institute Europe has a foundation and can receive donations in accordance with local laws.

Currently, there are three va’adot in The Netherlands, two of them in the Amsterdam area and one in Almere. Hana Fischer, formerly of the Netherlands, now of Australia, is available for presentations in the Melbourne area.
